Landscape
The state rises gradually from the east coast to the hilly and more rural interior. The Coastal Plains, the coastal zone that consists of lowlands continues to rolling hills. In this area are sandy beaches. The Piedmont Region is the central hilly area with several large lakes. In the extreme west the hills continue further as the Blue Ridge Mountains, about 1,000 meters above sea level.
Climate
