20 miles, 1,700’ gain.
Meet us at the Royal Kona (public shuttle is available from/to the Kona airport) in the heart of downtown Kona. Bicycle south through Kona's coffee plantations. Continue past mango, banana and avocado trees down to the ocean. Lunch at the white sands of the City of Refuge, Pu 'uhonua O Honaunau national historic park. Long-ago Hawaiians who had displeased their king fled to this sacred place; many of its ancient ruins remain. This afternoon, stop for a tour and tasting at Greenwell Coffee Farm. Tonight, stay at the Royal Kona Oceanfront Resort and enjoy the oceanside pool, take advantage of the full-service on-site spa, or visit the local shops.
Visit South Point, the southern-most point of the United States. Bike to Punalu’u black sand beach for an encounter with Honu (green sea turtles).
35 miles, 2,700’ gain.
Shuttle to South Point, explore the scenic bluffs of the southern-most point in the United States. Pedal to Na’alehu for lunch at the Sweet Bread Bakery, which happens to be the southern-most bakery in the U.S. After lunch, ride the scenic southern flank of Mauna Loa to the macadamia and coffee farm-rich village of Pahala. Watch for the Hawaiian goose, the Nene, strutting here and there. Continue on to the black sand beaches of Punalu’u. Spy some honu (green sea turtles) sunning on the rocky beach. Shuttle to Volcano for tonight’s stay at Chalet Kilauea Rainforest Hotel.
NOTE: The highway up to Volcano is open and safe for visitors, as are businesses and amenities in the town of Volcano.

30 miles, 400’ gain (4,000’ descent).
Take it easy today coasting down from Mauna Loa. Visit Akatsuka Orchid Garden for a tour and tasting where you’ll get your fill of the tangy sweet poha berries. Pedal on to the small town of Pahoa where some roads disappeared beneath creeping lava just a few years ago. Bicycle through banyan forest and farmland beside the spectacular rocky coastline. Shuttle to the Hilo Hawaiian for the next 2 nights’ stay with oceanfront views overlooking Hilo Bay.
NOTE: As above, the highway through the town of Volcano is open and safe for visitors. We may update our itinerary when services re-open in Volcanoes National Park.

Walls swathed in tropical green stand tall, protecting this ancient valley on three sides; the fourth is the sapphire sea. Feel like a bit more cycling? Continue through lush countryside into cowboy country before shuttling over the shoulder of Kohala to quiet Hawi village. Stay tonight at the Kohala Village Inn.
Celebrate a week well spent with a cruise aboard a luxury catamaran to snorkel a hidden bay.
After breakfast, shuttle to the western Kohala Coast (or bike if you wish) to board a 58-foot luxury sailing catamaran. Sail to a great dive and snorkel spot along the coast. Snorkel equipment, instruction, food, and drinks are included in your trip fee. Watch for humpback whales during their January through March migration. Some groups are fortunate enough to spy as many as 40 whales and a dozen breechings — an awesome experience!
