TRUTH, CONSEQUENCES & UFOS
Flagstaff, close to some incredible Native American pueblo sites and cliff dwellings at Wupatki National Monument, is the start to this fascinating section. The riders will spin south through a vast pine forest and quirky towns like Happy Jack and Strawberry before turning east and continuing into the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. In 1975 this was the site of one of the most famous alleged alien abductions, dramatized in the 1993 movie, Fire in the Sky. Having avoided being whisked off into space, the riders will spend the night in the nearby town of Show Low. The name came from a poker game in the 1800’s where the winner of a nearby ranch was the one who displayed the lowest card in a draw, the deuce of clubs.

The route then heads into New Mexico, highlighted by a couple of days of cycling through the isolated Gila National Forest with its waterfalls, cliffs and mountain views. This is followed by a rest day in Truth or Consequences, a town famous for having changed its name to that of a popular radio quiz show in order to host a programme for the show’s 10th anniversary. The riders will be happy to know that its previous name, Hot Springs, lives up to its promise for a relaxing soak. Cyclists will now pass by the huge White Sands Missile Range where on July 16, 1945, the first.
